Depressing Fitness Friday

I haven't written a Fitness Friday in a while. I feel like they are just depressing posts. At least to me.

I got diagnosed with Hypothyroidism last summer. The Endocrinologist has tweaked my meds and considers my hormone levels good. I have been trying really hard to lose weight since I was diagnosed. Nothing is working. It is not lack of will power. My body is just not working right. I am sick of being fat. I have tried Weight Watchers, counting calories, gluten free, and the South Beach Diet. I don't cheat but I also don't lose. If I lose 3 lbs one week, I gain it the next week despite not changing anything. I work out 4-6 times a week. I do cardio (elliptical, jogging, and aerobics) and interval weight training. Nothing is working.

I asked my Endocrinologist about lack of weight loss at my last appointment a couple months ago. He kinda blew me off. I don't think he totally understood what I was saying. I think he thought I just can't stick to a healthy eating plan.

I am beyond frustrated. I was a Health and Physical Education teacher before I stayed home with the kids. I know the science behind weight loss. I know how to train. Eventually I want to go back to teaching but I know no one is hiring a heavy Health/PE teacher. That just adds to the pain.

I know that some of my readers have Hypothyroidism too. Did you find anything that worked for you? I'm willing to try. I'm not giving up yet but I'm getting close.

(((((hugs))))) to you...

I have hypothyroidism, specifically Hashimoto's, which it the most common form of hypothyroidism. Doctors just don't always test for Hashi's specifically and/or don't tell their patients. It has been said that if you have hypothyroid, you likely have Hashimoto's.

I know people aren't always ready to hear this, but maybe you are. You have to get off grains, most especially gluten containing grains. But getting off all grains is best. Stop eating sugar, artificial sweeteners, legumes, soy and dairy. Check out http://www.marksdailyapple.com/ or get his book from the library. If you have any questions, I am happy to talk with you.

I started eating Paleo/Primal a few months ago. I've lost 18 pounds now. I'm 46 years old and thought that was simply not possible at my age. I do not work out a lot. I go to the gym once a week to lift weights. I walk a little. That's it. I have seen person after person start this lifestyle, feel better and lose weight.

If you want to talk about this, please contact me. Again, (((((hugs))))).

I wish that I could say something more helpful than hang in there. Would seeing an endocrinologist who is more attuned to your concerns help?

I would try seeing a female endocrinologist if there is one near you. That guy sounds like a butt :-( sorry I have no advice. In a holding pattern with my shrinking thyroid...

Oh hon, I can feel your frustration in this post. I don't have any advice but will tell you that I think you look fabulous! Sending hugs.

I wish I had some really great advice for you. I have heard really great things about the Paleo diet, maybe try that out. And also, a new doctor if possible. If yours is not giving your valid concerns the attention they need, he's not doing his job. I am really sorry you have this roadblock in your way. Many, many hugs.

How frustrating:( I would definitely look for another doctor, too. Have you considered a Naturopath? I'm going to track down the name of a nutritionist/naturopath some gals from school used to go to in your area...Hang in there! You're beautiful, and talented in so many ways, and you've also been so inspiring:) Hugs!

That has got to be really frustrating. I am so sorry that I don't have any advice to you. I would just keep on doing what you doing while trying to hunt down as much information as you can about how to overcome this hurdle. You cannot be the only one going through this. Sometimes, despite all their education, doctors are idiots, especially male doctors. They don't understand how women feel. I hope you find the answers you seek soon. (((HUGS)))
