Fashion Making Girls Grow Up Too Soon

My daughter has always been at the top of the height charts. She is almost 6 and wearing a 7/8. Nothing wrong with having a tall child, except once you get into the big kid sizes the fashion industry thinks that you want your daughter to dress like a pre-teen/whore.

Shopping for Easter dresses is a project. I like the cute dresses that look like this:
They stop making these dresses after size 6x. The dresses in most stores look like prom dresses or street walkers. That is why I'll pay more to shop at Gymboree or Land's End because they still carry cute clothes in the bigger sizes.

Have you seen the push up bikini top that Abercrombie Kids is pushing? Sizes start with small (the equivalent of size 7.) First of all, what are these little girls pushing up? I know puberty starts earlier but most kids sized small are not developed yet. Who on earth wants their kids pushing their bosom's up that young or ever?
Today, I saw a commercial for Sketcher's Shape-Ups shoes for girls. Really? Is that the message you want to send your daughters? You should wear these shoes to tone your booty. I don't beleive they really work but the message you send by buying these for a young girl can be beyond damaging. If you daughter is overweight, change the way the family eats and find fun ways to exercise together.
Seeing fashion items like these makes me sad. Why can't we let little girls look and act like little girls? I hope my daughter doesn't have to think about how shapely her butt is and pushing up her chest for a long, long time.

I saw the Abercrombie bikini, but I hadn't seen the shape-ups. That is ridiculous!

I saw the Abercrombie bikinis on the news and was horrified. WTF?

My daughter is 18 now but I remember the same sad feelings when she was about 6 and I could no longer buy 'little girl' dresses for her to wear.(except expensive brands my budget could not afford)

Over the years the sexualisation of our little girls has just become worse and worse with 'bras' made for girls from 3 years old and other totally inappropriate items.

I agree with you that much of the clothing for young girls is simply slutty.I refused to buy anything for my children that I deemed sick or inappropriate (and oh boy does this stuff meet that criteria in my opinion) and my wish is that many more mothers will do the same.

Sadly the manafacturers will keep producing this kind of thing because there are some mothers who think it's harmless fun and ok to dress little girls this way. Sorry my comment has turned into a short story! :)

I have a 13 year old daughter, so this is something that's been bothering me for a while. It's hard to find clothes that both fit and are age appropriate. I'm glad she's a jeans and tshirt kind of girl.

I am SO glad you posted this!!! I could not agree with your more. I tried looking for a bathing suit for my 3 and 4 year old last year (now 4 and 5) and couldn't find ANYTHING that didn't look like they were 15 year old bathing suits. Okay, scratch that--I wouldn't even let my 15 year old wear the suits they had for 3 and 4 year olds. So anyway, i finally found some cute suits at Target. But Target also has some really bad styles especially for the 6 and older age. Can't kids just look like kids anymore.
Anyway, sorry for the soapbox here in your comment box, but I SO agree with you. And the shoes? Please. I don't want my children to EVER worry about their weight. I'm more concerned with how they develop on the inside.

This is truly horrifying! I swear sometimes I just want to go live on a deserted island. We have had luck at Kohl's, finding age appropriate clothes for Princess, and at bargain prices, too! Do you have Kohl's?

Saw those suits on the news the other day. Why/who/what? Dumbest thing I ever saw! When I was 7 I wouldn't have wanted or thought of that, and my mother would have put the brakes on if I had. CRAZY!

You are so right. This is so sad. It seems that they are trying to reduce the childhood so much, to make it non-existent. Why should little girls start developing that mentality of using their body like that? Fortunately, these products haven't reached the market here yet, but I'm pretty sure they are on their way. I hope they fail. Big time.
