What do you say?

I just talked to a friend who is 30 weeks pregnant and on bed rest for bleeding. I feel like a total idiot. I didn't know what to say. Of course I asked how she was and if I could do anything. She asked about the kids. I started complaining about their colds. How dumb is that! This woman is praying to keep her baby in her womb a little longer and I'm complaining over simple colds. I think the problem is I want to be able to do something for her but I can't figure out what to do. She is on bed rest for a couple more weeks at least. What do you do for a woman in this situation?

PS She is out of state so I can't visit in person.

It's so hard to know what to say when someone is going through something difficult, and even harder when it is something you couldn't even imagine happening. Just know that sometimes people do want to hear just regular old stuff, about colds and every day life because you can't dwell on the bad stuff all the time or you will go crazy. I'm sure you said all the right stuff :).

Keep sending prayers and/or positive thoughts...and I agree with Jen that "regular" is so important. You were asked about YOU and the kids and you shared your piece of reality for the moment. Even just the act of "venting" is extremely give and take among friends and true friends know the importance of allowing it. Continue to let her know she's in your thoughts...send a card, send a funny movie, anything to keep her spirits high will help with whatever is going on inside her body.
